Many of us are now familiar with the concept of biometrics from our passports. Using this method, a physical measurement unique to you is taken and then used at a later date to verify your identity.
For example, your voice is a biometric data point. So, too, might be your fingerprints, your face, a scan of your retina and so on. The only requirement is that the measurement taken could only belong to you – in this way, biometrics is as secure as you can get.
The concept isn’t especially new, of course – anyone who reads Victorian crime literature will know that dusting for fingerprints is hardly a novel science. But modern digital technology has opened up new fronts in biometrics – and made it more widely applicable, too.
Most obviously, many of us now have fingerprint tech in our pockets: many smartphones now come equipped with a feature that enables us to unlock our device merely by placing our thumbprint over a button. This offers functionality to app designers, too – and there are big benefits to accrue.
PINs and passwords are often long enough no longer. In other words, four-character passcodes are just too easy to crack. They don’t provide your users with the security of data that they deserve – and expect. Biometrics, on the other hand, are much harder to fake.
This is because there is more than one option for biometric security. Obviously, a fingerprint is hard to fake; but it’s also true that biometrics offer so many variables – fingerprint or retina scan or face measurement – that it’s much harder for a hacker to zero in on which variable is being used to secure the data.
Multi-factor authentication like this provides for powerful security assurance. Why secure sensitive data with only one layer of protection? Instead, consider using a passcode and a biometric element – or use two biometric measurements in place of one!
Your mobile app should matter to your user; if it does, the data therein will be important to them, too. Reward their loyalty by keeping it safe. Achieving this security is one of the primary benefits of using biometric authentication in your mobile app.
We provide mobile app design and development for all project requirements, both consumer and business apps. If you’re in need of a mobile app or just have an idea for a project you wish to discuss, please contact us to arrange a consultancy.
